A SPACE TO ARRIVE AS YOU ARE
Quiet. Collected. Considered. Personal
NOT A HOTEL
MORE THAN A HOUSE
Casa Moja is a home perched on a cliff above the Indian Ocean in Mombasa.
A place where every piece has been collected over time rather than decorated. Objects gathered on travels around the world sit quietly within muted interiors, with an occasional dash of colour. Nothing competes with what lies beyond the windows.
The ocean is always there.
THE SPACES BETWEEN
There are places to come together and places to disappear.
The infinity pool overlooking the Indian Ocean. Private access down to the beach.
Quiet corners to disappear into - close enough to be there, hidden enough not to be. Terraces in front of the rooms.
The garden to spread a mat, walk around or just enjoy the scent of an old frangipani tree.
The living room and the objects that have found their way into it.
And spaces without a prescribed purpose, allowed to become what the moment asks of them.
THE BEDROOMS
Seven rooms, each different, all facing the Indian Ocean.
Quiet in character and individually considered, they carry the same restrained palette as the rest of the house - allowing the light, the greenery and the Ocean outside to take centre stage.
Crisp linen against the skin, natural fibers underfoot, the coolness of marble in the bathrooms.
No two are quite the same.
THE PAVILION
Open on all sides beneath its roof, the Pavilion was recently built according to the Japanese proportions of nine tatami.
Above its entrance sits the symbol for Ma - the wisdom of the spaces between, a reminder that a pause offers clarity.
Here there may be movement, sound or stillness.
Or simply the Ocean.
THE TEAM
Pascal is part of the everyday rhythm of Casa Moja. Chef alongside Lucinda, he is here throughout the year, filling the kitchen from morning onwards with wonderful food. Generous by nature and always smiling, nothing seems to please him more than seeing people enjoy what he has made.
Linet and Violet quietly keep the serenity around the house, making sure everyone feels comfortable.
Hamisi is so much more than a gardener. He is the soul of it, making sure the pool is crystal clear and the grounds beautifully kept. If you are lucky, you might just catch sight of the top of his hat behind masses of bougainvillea, gathered to be spread around the house.
Much of what happens at Casa Moja happens quietly.
You simply feel it.
ONE
Moja means one in Swahili.
It is also personal to us - a name born from the initials of the family behind the house.
The hand-painted Ensō that forms the O of MOJA speaks to the same idea: wholeness, space, the imperfect and the complete.
One house.
A space between the space.
